FEBRUARY LAUNCH

Brimbank LIVE was a youth-centred radio program spawned through Sydenham Neighbourhood House (SNH) and Brimbank Neighbourhood Houses (BNH). The program was supported by the BNH&CC unit and Making Media Australia, a company that specialises in live and on-demand video, radio and podcast production. In the Brimbank LIVE program, young participants were granted the platform, support, tools and resources to form and lead their own radio station and respective radio shows that would broadcast to local and global listeners. Young people led the decision making processes in the program as they decided the format and nature of their radio station, Brimbank LIVE, and created the specific shows that would feature on it.

This was the launch of Dr Roshani Jayawardana’s report based on her PhD reserarch and included a panel disucssion with participants of the program (see video link above)

FEBRUARY SEMINAR

Treatments for eating disorders and body image concerns are typically developed for young, cisgender, white, able-bodied, thin women. Consequently, those who do not fit this stereotype of someone affected by these concerns may experience barriers to fully engaging in treatment. This presentation will give an overview of some of the limitations of eating disorder and body image concern treatment with a particular focus on how these treatments may overlook marginalised groups (e.g., LGBTQIA+ people, people who are differently racialized). The potential to improve treatments and potential directions for inclusive approaches to treatment will be discussed.

Jo is a researcher and lecturer in psychology within the College of Sport, Health, and Engineering at Victoria University. They completed their undergraduate studies in psychology at Flinders University in 2014, and completed their PhD, which focused on stigma and eating disorders, at La Trobe University in 2018. Their current research interests are body image and eating disorders, particularly in marginalised people. They have lived experience of an eating disorder.
