TRANSNATIONALISM AND NATIONS

The increasing significance of transnational social, political and economic networks is displacing our familiar understandings of community and identity. In the context of globalisation, the connections people maintain with their country of origin, or the ways organisations and social movements (such as the peace, environmental or human rights movements) forge new links across national borders. However nations, nation-building and national identity are still highly constitutive of our social worlds. Researchers in the college are particularly concerned with the intersection between transnationalism and nations on one hand, and ‘place’, social movements, inclusion and equity on the other.
